Congratulations with your shiny new iPhone X, or maybe you newly obtained the more classic lines of the iPhone 8 — no matter which new Apple iPhone series you've chosen, there are major settings you should tweak instantly in order to get the best out of your device.

There are several features offered by iPhone and when you newly obtain your device, you need to change some Key settings, this step by step guide applies to iPhone X, 8, or 8 Plus

The 10 key iPhone settings you need to change now

TURN ON BATTERY PERCENTAGE

The first thing you must consider doing is enabling the battery percentage, if you find yourself simply estimating the battery life with the little bar to the top right of your screen, then you won't be certain when exactly your battery needs to be charged or if you can afford leaving your charger at home. Ordinarily, this feature should be enables by default and it is a little weird that this isn’t, but let's not make a mountain out of a molehill as this can easily be sorted. To solve this, Go to Settings > Battery and toggle on Battery Percentage. This is the best way to enable the battery percentage next to the battery bar on an iPhone 8 or older, other in an iPhone X, you will have to swipe down from the top right to see the battery percentage in Control Center, this is because this version's notch doesn’t leave enough room in the status bar.

SET AUTO-LOCK

There are several things that drains out battery life from devices and on top of that list is our screen, so it is better to set the device's auto lock feature as low as possible because you don't want people people peeping at your phone was you turn away. On the other hand, it’s so frustrating when you are momentarily distracted while using your phone just to look back to find your screen locked, so estimate the perfect lock interval and head straight to Settings > Display & Brightness.

SCHEDULE DO NOT DISTURB

Devices shouldn't boss you around or get you distracted, you should set some periods aside when your device won't disturb you, this is recommended for the hours you usually sleep, to schedule so not disturb, Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and toggle on Scheduled, then select your Quiet Hours. If you worry this move can deny you answering important calls or messages, then you can set up Allow Calls From and toggle on Repeated Calls.

SET THE BLUE LIGHT FILTER

An amazing feature that filter out the blue light and make your device's screen warmer, Apple calls this feature Night Shift and it can help you fall asleep more easily after reading on your iPhone late at night. To filter the blue light, Go to Settings > Display & Brightness> Night Shift and then toggle it on, but we recommend toggling on Scheduled and picking times that suit you or selecting Sunset to Sunrise.

HIDE UNWANTED APPS

To get rid of an app, simply long-press on the icon for it until the icons start wiggling and then tap the X in the top corner to uninstall. Although this procedure works for most apps, but for some stock apps, this will simply hide or disable them — they’re not really uninstalled — and you can always bring them back via the App Store.

To manually hide apps on your iPhone, especially the ones you don't use often and you don't wish to get rid of them, then it's better you create a folder and move it to a later page on your screen so they are not visible as titty scroll through your screen. To do this, tap and hold on the app icon until they all start wiggling, then drop it on top of another app icon to create a folder. Name it whatever you want. If you add more apps to the folder, then you can move the app you want to hide to a later page in the folder, making it even less likely to be found.

ADJUST 3D TOUCH SENSITIVITY

3D Touch enables you to press on the screen to peek at further options for some apps and jump to shortcut actions. Although, this feature can definitely take a little practice before you can use effectively, but you will certainly find it really useful once you get used to it. You will even get a feel for it faster if you tweak it to suit you. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > 3D Touch and you can choose from Light, Medium, and Firm.

CUSTOMIZE CONTROL CENTER

Some apps are frequently used on your device like the Torch and Wi-Fi. You can choose to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the Control Center for shortcuts to these apps. Some of these are fixed, however, you can also customize a few by going to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. Tap the green plus icon next to anything you want to add or the red minus icon next to anything you want to remove.

SET YOUR EMAIL SIGNATURE

Appending "Sent from my iPhone” to every email you send is certainly not what you want, It’s easy to change this setting and use a custom signature for your Email. To do this, simply go to Settings > Mail > Signature and you can delete the message and switch it for something else or leave it blank.

SET UP EMERGENCY SOS

Do you have an emergency response plan? This setting should be the first on everyone's list to tweak when they just get their device, but no one wants to imagine that the worst will ever happen. Setting up the emergency SOS can help contact 911 or the appropriate emergency service in your region and when the worst is witnessed, you will be glad you set up Emergency SOS. To do this, Go to Settings > Emergency SOS and toggle on Auto Call. With this you can contact emergency authorities by pressing and holding the side button and either volume button.

An even more appealing feature is setting up Emergency Contacts via the Health app, where you can also add details on any medical conditions you have and things like your blood type, with emergency contact saved on your health app, each time you trigger Emergency SOS, they will also receive a message automatically to let them know that you called the emergency services. Emergency Contact can be added in the Medical ID tab at the bottom right. Set up emergency SOS and Emergency contact on your health app as your emergency response plan.

BACK UP YOUR PHOTOS

Some people chose the iPhone solely for their pictures and to these people, their photos are the most precious things, so it’s worth making sure that yours are being backed up. You can do this by going to Settings > Photos and toggling on iCloud Photo Library.

When you consider Apple's stingy act when it comes to storage space in the cloud, giving you just 5GB for free, you might consider installing the free Google Photos app because your iCloud fills up fast and maybe you don’t want to pay for more space. you can toggle on Back up & sync during the Google photos app setup process. Google gives you 15GB for free and you can also get another 5GB for free from Microsoft OneDrive or Amazon Prime Photos. Both apps are free and offer automatic photo backup.

These are the 10 major iPhone features and settings you must change as soon as you obtain your device. I hope this step by step guide was helpful?
